How To Play Guitar Fast And Accurate Using Rhythmic Practice That Gives You Timing Like The Gears Of A Watch

It’s often that fast guitar playing leads to an out-of-control feeling that causes sloppy notes. Getting your speed back under control by practicing using recording software is a powerful way to play guitar fast and accurate consistently.

Using recording software during guitar practice also ensures that you do not develop a weak area in your playing that holds you back from fluidly integrating your skills into music (because you can both see and hear your mistakes).

Use This Exercise To Play Guitar Fast And Accurate With Recording Software

Step One:
Choose a guitar lick you want to play fast and clean.

Step Two:
Play through the lick you chose and find problem notes in one area that prevent you from playing it fast and accurate.

Step Three: Isolate these problem notes from the other notes.

For example, if you are playing a scale and only struggle with only three notes, only practice these notes.

Step Four: Practice the notes from step three by playing them as fast as you can. Repeat this over and over while adding a moment of rest at the end of repetition.

The following video demonstrates how this practice technique works to help you play guitar faster and more accurately without slowing down:

This gives you time to process your mistakes and correct them next time you repeat the notes.

Practice this step for 10 minutes or until you feel ready to move on.

Step Five:
Next, record yourself playing the guitar lick 10 times in a row. Leave the problem notes out of the recording for now (so there is silence where they would be).

Step Six: Practice using the following drills to clean up problem notes in the lick using recording software.

Note: Use this free guitar recording guide to speed up the recording process and help your tracks sound better.

1.   For 1 minute, practice adding only ONE of the problem notes while playing over a loop of the rest of the lick (that you just recorded). Continue this way by adding one note each minute until you have added all the problem notes.

2.   Create a separate track and record yourself filling in the guitar lick with the missing notes. Then go back and listen to the notes on their own and together with the lick. Pay close attention to hear (and see via the wave forms) if they are in time and spot any sloppy mistakes.

3.   Now make the corrections needed and record yourself playing the entire guitar lick 10 times in a row. Listen back to it to hear that it is in perfect time and contains little/no mistakes.

Now practice the guitar lick to improve your timing and accuracy using rhythmic creativity practice.

Step Seven:
Follow the sub-steps below.

1.   Set up your recording software to use a metronome/count in a different meter than the one the lick is in. This will accent notes differently and challenge you to stay in time in a unique manner.

Then record yourself playing the lick 10 times over three different meters.

2.   Record yourself playing the lick 10 times while accenting the notes of the lick in a unique manner. Play every 7th note with a heavier pick attack to emphasize it (this will be visible on the recording). This challenges you to play with impeccable timing, taking your mastery of the lick to a new level.

Review the waveform and listen back to the recording to see how well you did.

3.   Record yourself playing only every 3rd note in the lick. Then record yourself playing only every 4th, and every 5th note. This challenges you to pick with precise rhythmic accuracy to play the note right on time.

Review the waveform and listen back to the recording to see how well you did.

It becomes easy to play any guitar lick fast and accurate after going through this creative guitar practice approach. However, there are tons of other ways to practice guitar in order to increase your speed and eliminate sloppy mistakes.
